“I want to share my testimony with you because it gives us a template for how people in my generation can become converted to faith in Jesus in a passionate way. My story is a case study in what is wrong with Progressive politics and religious life today.
I’m the daughter of two progressive Baptist ministers, so I had every opportunity to know about Jesus as prophet of social justice. I always thought that peace and justice sounded like a real good idea, and environmentalism, too. I didn’t care much about God, though. Invoking supernatural powers seemed a bit unnecessary. But I got baptized at the tender age of eleven, because I agreed with Jesus on an intellectual level, and I didn’t see the point of waiting for a dramatic Damascus Road experience that might never come. Throughout high school and college, I was active in a variety of progressive issues: environmentalism, legal aid for migrant farmworkers, human rights in Latin America.”
