Sometime in the early 90’s, before email was ubiquitous, I sent out a mailing with a self-addressed stamped envelope to a number of folks (famous and not) I admired with one question: What are the three books that have had the greatest influence on your life? To my surprise, many of the famous folks responded, including Os Guinness, JI Packer, Jack Kemp, and even then President Bush. (One day I need to digitize those results and post them.)
I well remember my excitement in 2004 as I watched Gibbs giving a press conference announcing that he was returning to the Redskins. It felt like Christmas.
But this afternoon Gibbs announced he’s leaving the Redskins to focus more on his family. Surely his 2 year old grandson Taylor’s fight against Leukemia was one consideration that motivated Gibbs to move on.
Fellow Redskins’ fan Mark Moring posted a fine Christianity Today post today about Gibbs leaving the ‘Skins.
But I was kind of glad Gibbs resigned. The last couple of times I had seen him on TV he appeared very weathered. After a very rough year with the tragic murder of Sean Taylor, Gibbs has been under a terrible strain. Yet, he’s handled it with poise and grace.
But we will miss him.
